You're probably already familiar with the Selby, but if you don't receive updates via email or in your reader of choice I'd say you should scoot on over to catch up. The newest addition to their series represents the exquisite corpse of a home belonging to artists Jessica Grindstaff & Erik Sanko.  It's a wunderkammer reminiscent of a brightened Brothers Quay film set. Le sigh.

I'll tell you why that's exciting....because I get to punch out a new creature from my Zoo Calendar! It was a much-appreciated Christmas gift from one of my favorite ladies - new animal for every two months, this time a deer of sorts.

This isn't really news, but it was to me. Penguin has re-released British, and Canadian, contemporary titles with the classic grid design originally used in 1935. They're 'colour-coded' according to genre and I love 'em.

From the Curiosity Group in Portland, Oregon comes a brief animated glimpse of their papercraft at play. From Flat to Flight features the same winged elephant you can print and fashion yourself. Wonderful!

flashback to Coles Phillips

Philips was an illustrator and painter early in the 20th century, his first magazine cover appearing on Life's February 1908 issue.  In addition to long runs doing cover art for Life and Good Housekeeping, Phillips was in high demand for advertisements. In turn, he was one of the first artists to insist his name appear on each of his images.  I'm really drawn to the scenes he creates and the bold vs. implied line-work.

Polly Morgan

It seems I'm on a taxidermy kick lately...or the art world at large is...but Polly Morgan has an approach unlike others I've come across. Her creatures find themselves in rather unnatural settings, encouraging you to look at the animals as if for the first time.

I'm quite taken with the ornate, yet ordered, work of Louise Despont's series entitled "the Plant Life of Saints." She uses antique ledger paper as the backdrop for her graphite and inks.
